L.A. stories of inspiration and success

WSC operator El Proyecto del Barrio connected with job seekers at the City of Los Angeles Public Works Career Fair in January 2024
On January 25, 2024, the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works partnered with Councilmember Imelda Padilla to host a Career Fair in Van Nuys at the Airtel Plaza Hotel. Throughout the career fair, representatives from over 14 City of L.A. departments were available to provide resources, information, and guidance to job seekers.

Over 3,600 people attended in hopes of learning about potential jobs with the City of Los Angeles. Resources available to all job seekers included on-site interviews for full-time and part-time jobs, expedited hiring information, background checks, medical examinations, eight workshops, and a computer lab where job seekers could apply for jobs with the assistance of the City of Los Angeles’ Personnel Department

Councilmember Imelda Padilla greeted and spoke with various City department representatives. “This fair gives people opportunities for new journeys and new careers throughout the City of Los Angeles. I’m proud to have partnered with the Department of Public Works to make this event a success”, stated Padilla.

On behalf of EWDD, General Manager Carolyn Hull and WorkSource Center partners El Proyecto del Barrio, Inc, and Goodwill of Southern California were in attendance. The participating WorkSource Centers provided information for over 15 programs to youth and adults about job training and impact programs, and guided job seekers who were interested in applying to the City’s Targeted Local Hire (TLH) Program.

EWDD’s WorkSource Centers, located throughout the City, are available to assist job seekers in any step of the employment process where they might be stuck. "We walk them through the job search by assisting, coaching, and familiarizing them with the current environment of getting a job," said Magdalena Duran, WorkSource Center Director.

EWDD’s WorkSource Centers offer free job training, resume assistance, and skill training and placement services to local job seekers. Centers also offer a variety of employment, training and support services to L.A. businesses.
